Lennon's message from past

12.41, Thu Aug 3 2006

A billboard has been put up in New York, bearing a quotation from songwriter John Lennon.

The mysterious adverts simply say, "War is over! If you want it."

But the mystery was solved when it was revealed that the hoarding is an advertisement for a new documentary about John Lennon and Yoko Ono's anti-war campaigning.

The former Beatle and his wife, erected identical billboards in 1969, in cities all over America to draw attention to the conflicts in the world.

The film, The US vs John Lennon, charts his transformation from a musician into a political activist.

It also hints that his activities may have brought him to the attention of the US government, who then tried to silence him. The film is due for release in September.
